Plays quick, is simple, has a solid 8-bit charm to it.. A Small Robot Story is a quick game that has a ton of heart and packs a hard punch. The game is well paced, upping the ante in difficulty with every level, while also giving the player new abilities after every boss fight which gives much needed variety in a genre that is otherwise sometimes stagnant. Overall it's a solid experience with a great soundtrack, and a story that actually has some unexpected twists and turns. Absolutely worth it for a nostalgic evening in.. Great robot action! Great ear music! I must be getting old because I can't beat this game! Still lots of fun though.. Pfoooh, I have to admit that this review is anything but easy to do. A Small Robot Story is an okay game. The artstyle is definitely on the NES-style. Controls are pretty tight and there is the nod to Mega Man. Why can't I recommend it though?Frankly for as much as I would like to give it a positive review, there are simply too many instances where this game is a letdown. I'll try to summarize my gripes with it and then leave it up to you to decide if you want to buy it.Gripes:The length of the game is frankly too short. If you fumble through the first playthrough due to reasons below or otherwise, that takes at most one hour. If you hunt for the achievements then at most you'll tack on another. At most, I reiterate, for you might not lose any continues on the first go. Just four levels to cross, each with three segments and a boss. The difficulty is also very low. Of all the enemies, only the bosses, the jumping bean and the charging tanklet give any challenge. Enemy AI is practically non-existent and their patterns, once spotted, are easily taken advantage of.The only real difficulty is in level design. There are tons of instant death pits and jumps that are tricky simply by the fact that the next platform is not (always) visible on screen when you stand on one.Sticking with level design, there's a lot of repetition in what graphical elements are used. There's less variety than say in an actual NES game like Jacky Chan's Action Kung Fu. The first two levels are the prettiest, but even there this holds true. Add in the fact that you have to slog through 3 segments in each and have to redo from the start if you use a continue... well, that gets old really quickly. No hidden areas, no camouflaged collectibles, nothing. Each level is filled with spots where a veteran gamer immediately wants to check\/shoot\/jump at to see if anything is hidden. Spare yourself this search, there's nothing there. The music is unmemorable and the story? Heh, heheheheh... nope. Like this thoughThe graphical style is nice, shame about there being so little variety. The controls are pretty good, though you need the keyboard q button to quit the game.In conclusion, A Small Robot Story feels like an abandoned project that was 'finished' to make money. It could have been a great game had there been more levels, better enemies, better music and some hidden things to find. As it stands though, I do not recommend picking it up unless its on sale. Otherwise, go play Khimera for free.. A Small Robot Story is a great retro-styled platformer, and if you're a fan of Mega Man or Mario, you should definitely give it a shot.. A Small Robot Story is a pretty fun and fast paced platformer that feels properly modular in its speed and playstyle, but it has a particular preference in that style. The boss battles are pretty fun and they scale in difficulty appropriately.Pros: The response time and fluidity of playing feels great. The pixelated art direction looks nice, and there is a lot of great animation. The music is really really good, especially the 3rd level. There is a lot of love and care in this release from the developer, and you can see it.Cons: Areas are pretty sprawling, but the level design doesn't feel intuitive, so to say. They are certainly long enough, though. There is little reward for exploration aside from batteries, so there is little reason than to "run through the maze". Likewise, there is no reward really for killing enemies, either. This angles the playstyle to be fast, linear and pacifistic.Overall, I really like the game. It was a lot of fun and because my initial playthrough didn't "catch" the desired playstyle until the last level, it will likely drive me to try other ways to beat it. It's not an incredibly long game, but for the price it's most certainly a good time.. This is a fantastic game with rock solid controls! I highly recommend this one for anyone looking for a great mega man \/ cave story style game. The sound track is all chip tune and is nicely composed. Great all around game!. This game is a cute little platformer. The controls are responsive and the world is fun.
